We find group interview exercises to be a more reliable way to assess soft skills in action. Here are some examples we use:

  • Scenario-Based Discussions: We present the candidates with realistic scenarios that could occur onboard, such as a technical problem or a challenging weather situation. We observe how they communicate, collaborate to find solutions, and delegate tasks effectively.
  • Group Problem-Solving Activities: This could involve puzzles or challenges that require teamwork and creative thinking. How well do they listen to each other’s ideas, build upon one another’s strengths, and arrive at a solution collaboratively?
  • Role-Playing Exercises: Assigning specific roles within a simulated scenario allows us to see how candidates handle pressure, communicate clearly under stress, and assert themselves professionally when necessary.
